Mixtwitch formed sometime in 1997, when Clem, who was fronting a band called Diffusion at the time, joined Cags, Carl, Dave and Ann who were spreading their unique blend of grunge-rock-cr*p throughout the land under the cunning name 'Muzzle'. The styles of music of both bands changed with this magical new name (which Helen Hanley of the Irish Independent dubbed 'Dreadful') and gradually grew into the punk/ska influenced sound you all know and love. Or hate. Mixtwitch started playing in all the colleges, as well as in the quaint traditional spots such as the beautiful 'Fibbers', the mystical 'Slatteries' and the always pleasant 'Fusion Bar'. They played in all the College Battle of the Bands competitions - coming second in the UCD Engcentric 3 years in a row before finally winning the damn thing last year. They've won more Heineken than most bands they reckon - because thats what the prize always seems to be no matter where they come! They recorded their first demo in July 1997 in Trackmix Studios in Clonsilla - recording 5 songs and getting a load of them made up and sent off all around the place. They recorded another demo in early 1998 with 4 more songs including the infamous 'Successful Everyday Living'. Ann left the band pretty soon after that and Carl took up the Bass for a while, leaving Clem to look after the guitar mastery on his own. In March 1998 a shadowy character came on the scene, and invited Carl and Cags out for a seedy night on the town. They were wined and dined and given ciagarettes on trays and that sort of thing, which was nice, they even had a few drinks in the (Clarence Hotel, a fine establishment!) that wouldn't have seen the filthy likes of Carl or Cags anywhere near it's fine ales on any other day. This stranger turned out to be Robert Stephenson, Owner / Manager / Director of Treasure Island Records, who had heard Mixtwhich's first demo, and was interested in hearing the band live. So they played live somewhere, in Slattery's apparently, and then signed to Treasure Island not long after. They did a 2FM (radio) session and recorded 10 new songs in Trackmix during the summer. They released a Limited Edition Mini-Album on cassette called 'Five Songs And A Prick', which is dedicated to their old mate B.P. Fallon, a good pal o' the Mixtwich camp. They had songs on Panic Records' 'Electrically Charged' compilation, and on BMI's 'Planet Stereo', a compilation distributed to american college radio stations. In Early 1999 they decided the pressure on Clem to keep up his excellent axe mastery alone was just too much for one man, so they aquired Ronan at a small cake sale in Killiney. He took over bass so Carl could play guitar again and jump around more and get drunker at gigs and stuff. They started playing lots of Aidan Walsh All Ages gigs to hone their new 5-piece talents to perfection. In September they released their first single on Treasure Island - 'Successful Everyday Living', which did pretty well, despite having relatively little airplay on national radio. Since then they've been playing in Dublin, Cork, and Liverpool, where they played with woodrow to promote the 'Vent Your Angst' rollerblading video and soundtrack. They recorded 5 new songs at the end of 1999 and put the finishing touches on their album, 'Funny because it's true' which was released here in Ireland in August 2000... Until they get overseas distribution and all that lark you can buy the album directly from their web site (check out the link!). Show me where this band is playing! Other Winners...
